Private Initiative!Since April the Crystal Lakes Beetle Buster volunteers, in northern Larimer County, have inspected over 40 properties for pine beetle infestation and showed owners how to reduce the damage being caused. The beetle epidemic has inspired many more landowners to start forest management efforts on their own. The problem now is what to do with all the slash and infested logs piling up to fuel the next disastrous wildfire. A group of 47 forest landowners have decided to take the bull by the horns and address the problem right now. They have pooled their resources, raised $150,000 in two months, created a limited partnership, and purchased an air curtain burner to dispose of the wood. They are now getting the required permits and developing a site to begin operations. By the middle of August they plan to accept the first loads of wood from landowners throughout the Crystal Lakes, Red Feather and Glacier View areas. For a reasonable fee to cover startup expenses and operational overhead anyone can bring their slash and logs to be effectively and safely disposed of. The air curtain burner incinerates large volumes of wood at extremely hot temperatures. A curtain of air flows over the fire containing smoke and other particulates. Air curtain burners are being used successfully to reduce fuel loads in forests throughout Colorado, but, to the best of my knowledge, this is the first time a group of private forest landowners, without government assistance, have attempted to purchase and operate one. The private initiative displayed here should be applauded!
